Title of Course

Mindfulness in Modern Life: An Invitation to Practice

Course Overview

Mindfulness in Modern Life: An Invitation to Practice is a four-week introduction to mindfulness designed for everyday people living full, complex lives. The course offers a steady, accessible approach to practice that supports beginners while remaining meaningful for those with prior experience. Each session includes two guided meditations, a short teaching, and time for questions and discussion.

Participants will explore foundational mindfulness skills, including awareness of breath and body, meeting experience with curiosity and kindness, and cultivating steadiness in the midst of modern life. The course also introduces heart practices such as mettā, emphasizing how friendliness and compassion naturally support attention and emotional regulation.

The tone of the course is secular, trauma-sensitive, and invitational. Rather than striving for particular states, participants are encouraged to meet themselves as they are and to discover simple, sustainable ways to bring mindfulness into daily routines.

An optional fifth session, "Continuing the Journey," offers space for community-guided practice and conversation about maintaining momentum after the course ends.

Population Served

Adults on Oʻahu attending in person and participants joining online, including the general community connected to the Bodhi Tree Dharma Center, coworkers interested in deepening their mindfulness practice, and members of my recovery community (though the course itself will not focus on recovery).

Promotion Strategy

I will be promoting the course through The Bodhi Tree Dharma Center's website, social media, YouTube, and Substack, which I already use as a teacher. I will also reach out through my work network, friends in the recovery fellowship, and offer this to my own teacher's sangha for those who might wish to attend. He is enthusiastic about this and has been very encouraging.

Section 4: Additional Information

Additional Insights

I will be offering this practicum as four 90-minute sessions, with an optional fifth session for participants who want additional support or community discussion. My teaching style is improvisational within a clear structure: I work from concise outlines rather than scripts, allowing the content to meet the needs of the group while staying aligned with the practicum requirements.

The course will be offered in a hybrid format to serve both in-person participants on Oʻahu and those joining online. I expect a mixed group that may include community members connected to the Bodhi Tree Dharma Center, coworkers interested in deepening their mindfulness practice, and individuals from my recovery community. While some participants may be in recovery, the course itself is not recovery-focused.

Below is a brief outline of the four core sessions:

Week 1 — What Is Mindfulness?
Foundations of mindfulness, attitudinal qualities, breath and body as anchors.

Week 2 — Mindfulness of the Body and Breath
Embodiment, grounding, meeting discomfort, stability through awareness.

Week 3 — Mettā and the Brahmavihāras
Heart practices as support for mindfulness; cultivating friendliness and care.

Week 4 — Integration
Bringing together mindfulness, embodiment, and heart practices; supporting continuity.

My intention is to create a steady, trauma-sensitive environment that supports beginners while remaining meaningful for experienced meditators. I welcome any guidance on pacing, scope, or areas where I should be more explicit in meeting the practicum criteria.

While outside of the scope of the practicum itself, I'll be offering a 5th week optional sitting for those who wish to expand their practice.
